Consolidation Buried March 31, 1959

Not everyone in Leaksville , Spray  & Draper  wanted Consolidation as you can see. It was initially defeated on March 31, 1959. This is a picture of Jack Hopper  burying it on that evening.

In September 1967, however, residents of the three North Carolina municipalities voted to consolidate and create a new city with a population of 18,000. The consolidation of the three towns – Leaksville, Spray, and Draper, plus the Meadow Greens Sanitary District, an unincorporated area – marked the first time in the state’s history that more than three units of government had merged...Thus, Leaksville, created in 1797, ceased to be.
