Leaksville town officials will open bids July 15 on extensive improvements to
Leaksville's water and sewer systems.
Town voters approved an $850,000 bond issue for the improvements. These include extension of water lines to serve every house in the corporate limits, extension of sewer lines to serve as many property owners as possible, renovations to the water plant and a new water storage tank near the fairgrounds.
Mayor John Smith said it is hoped that work on these projects will be started immediately after contracts are let.
Dillard Burrel, Reidsville insurance agent, has been named general chairman of the 1952 Harvest Jubilee, staged each September by the Reidsville Jaycees. ... Mike Forline won his 10th game in a row for the Reidsville Luckies and 11th of the season as he pitched a seven-hit, 4-0 shutout of Greensboro. ... Vacation pay totaling $355,000 for 4,212 employees of Fieldcrest Mills in the Tri-Cities and Fieldale, Va., was distributed this week as the mills closed down for their annual 10-day break during the July 4th holiday period.
All of Rockingham County is sweltering, with high temperatures remaining above 90 degrees for 10 consecutive days, including two days when the mercury climbed above 100. ... Meanwhile, farm officials say Old Belt tobacco is beginning to need rain. Some farmers already have laid by their crops and priming of the tobacco could be started as soon as the coming week. ... Buddy Smith and Nancy Talley, both members of the Yanceyville Road 4-H Club were crowned King and Queen of Health for the Rockingham 4-H Clubs at an annual program held at Talley's Lake near Reidsville.
