Contracts totaling $601,434 have been let for a new senior high school for Leaksville Township

The new school will be built on a 34-acre tract centrally located between Leaksville, Spray and Draper. It will have classroom and auxiliary space for a faculty of 24 teachers, including library, home economics and music rooms. 

It also will have a gymnasium with seating capacity of 2,000. Until more funds become available, the gym also will serve as the auditorium. 

The new high school will house grades 10, 11 and 12. Once the high school is open, the present Draper and Leaksville high schools will be converted into junior high schools for the seventh, eighth and ninth grades. 

Construction will begin immediately and should be completed in 12 months. The general contractor will be Crosland Construction Company of Columbia, S.C. 

The Frank B. Hobgood Scholarship has been established at Reidsville's First Baptist Church and will be given annually to a present or former member of the church to attend college or seminary. Mrs. Hobgood set up the scholarship in memory of her husband, a Reidsville attorney and civic and church leader who died several months ago. ... Under redistricting legislation introduced in the General Assembly, Rockingham County could regain a State House seat taken away from it 10 years ago. The county's population of 65,000 appears to qualify it for the additional seat. ... John Smith and Sons of Leaksville has been awarded a contract to build a 30,000-square-foot office addition to Fieldcrest Mills' towel mill in Fieldale, Va. 

Mark Van Doren, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, will judge poetry entries for the 1951 Rockingham County Fine Arts Festival. ... Mrs. J. Frank King was hostess to the Leaksville-Spray History Club at her home, "Blossom Terrace." Speaker was Dr. E.P. Billups, who gave a patriotic talk. ... Basement quarters in the Reidsville Post Office have been remodeled, and the Rockingham County units of two federal farm agencies - the Production and Marketing Administration and the Farm-Home Administration - have moved into the space.
